ELECTION OF A FREETRADER
Sydney, September 14. Me. Turner, Freetrader, has been elected for the Gunnedah seat, rendered vacant by the resignation ox Mr. T. H. Goodwin.
THE VICTORIAN PARLIAMENT. Melbourne, September 14. In the Assembly last night, the Government were defeated on the tarifl. proposals in committee, where an amendment to increase the duty on. horses and sheep was carried. The Premier announced that should House agree to the amendment the Government would drop the tariff proposals and bring in an Electoral Bill, and advisethe Governor to dissolve Parliament. SCULLING RACE. Sydney, September 14. A sculling race for £200 between H. E. Searle and C. Xeilson, over the champion course on the rarramatta River, took place to-day, and was won by Searle by five lengths ; time, 21min. 3-lsec. After the race an offer was made to back Searle against Hanlan for £200, and a wager of 1000 to 800 on Searle. MEETING OF PARLIAMENT. Sydney, September 14. Parliament will meet on October 21.
