RETRENCHMENT MEETING AT WHANGAREI.
[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Whangarei, Thursday. A political meeting, convened by the chairman of the County Council, was held in the Town Hall last night. All the resolutions passed at the Otara meeting were endorsed by the chairmen of the Road Boards and ratepayers present. The prevailing opinion exI pressed at the meeting was that the expense of the Government or the country was entirely beyond the means of the colony, and that still further retrenchment was needed.
