FOOTBALLER DROWNED.
DEATH OF THE CAPTAIN OF
THE ENGLISH TEAM. LPKI&a ASSOCIATION.]
[Sydney, August 15. Seddon, the captain of the English football team, was drowned in the Hunter river at Maitlaud this afternoon.
He had gone out rowing in an outrigger, which capsized with him, and before any assistance could be rendered he sank.
In consequence of his death the match arranged to take place tomorrow between the English team and the Northern has been postponed.
The news of the death of Mr. Seddon in so sudden a manner will be received with deep regret in Auckland, where the unfortunate young- man not only excited admiration by his prowess as a footballer, but also gained the esteem of a large circle of friends and acquaintances by his unassuming demeanour and frank courtesy. His sterling qualities of firmness and uprightness had made him deservedly popular among his comrades, over whom he held great personal influence, while as an exponent of the English Rugby game he was one of the very finest forwards that have ever been seen in the colonies, fully bearing out the splendid reputation he brought from the north of England. Mr. Seddon was a native of Lancashire, and was but 26 years of age when cut off in so untimely a manner.
