THE SOCIETY OF ARTS MEETING.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— answer to the charges and insinuations which Mr. Holland brings against me in your issue of to-day, kindly allow me space for the following:— 1. As he appears to have watched my actions at the meeting very closely, he must be fully aware that in the ballot for the post of secretary I took no part, having refused the ballot paper when offered to me.2. In the previous ballot for the committee, I distinctly stated to the gentleman who handed round the papers, and to all who sat near me, that I was not a member and had no vote, wherefore I placed the paper in the hat a blank, as Mr. Holland admits. When doing so, I little thought the circumstance would have been made use of as the means to cast a stigma upon my cha, racter. I may add that 1 called upon Mr. Holland the next morning and made the above statements in the presence of a witness, so that he cannot charge me with concealing them.—l am, etc., S. Stuart. Auckland, August 11, 1888.
Having sat near to Mr. Stuart at the meeting, I can certify to the correctness of the. above statements. Kenneth Watkins.
