THE UNEMPLOYED IN THE SOUTH.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Timaru, Wednesday. Mr. Russell, of the Land Office here, went to Waimate on Monday, under instructions frorr the Government, to interview the unemployed who had petitioned for work. He took down the names of 55 married men willing to accept relief work at 3s 6d a day and 17 single men at 2s 6d a day, 6d extra to be allowed in each case if it was necessary to camp out. The majority of these men have been at Waimato many years, and are deserving men. The bush there was once extensive and gave much employment, bufc it is now about worked out. The farmers are retrenching in labour, and the local boards cannot afford to start relief work.
