Yesterday forenoon intelligence was received of the approach of a barque inside the : Little Barrier, and some speculation took •place as to what vessel she might be, as the •eva, 92 days out from London, Monica, 90 'days out from Rio Janeiro, and the Presto, 17 days from Brisbane, were all expected to put in an appearance. The tug Awhina went out about noon, and at half-past five returned with the last-named (the Presto) in tow, bringing her up abreast of the Queenstreet Wharf, where she anchored in the stream. The Presto is a fine iron barque of 384 tons, and comes under the command of Captain McGregor, with a cargo of coal and bonedust from Brisbane. She left that port on 17th July, and experienced strong S.E. winds for two days, after which fresh ■westerly breezes prevailed till the Three Kings were sighted at 6 a.m. on the 27th July. Down the coast light E. and S.E. winds were experienced till arrival as above. The Union S.S. Co.'s Tarawera returned from Russell yesterday morning about daylight, with three passengers—Rev. Father Mahoney, Messrs. Collins and Miller. During the day she was busy taking in cargo for the South, whither she will take her departure at noon to-day. The schooner Welcome, having completed her lading, was yesterday cleared at the Customs for Melbourne, and will probably sail during the night. ' She has a full cargo of sawn timber, and goes under command of Captain Cooper, who has succeeded Captain Fry. Mr. J. Anderson is the only passenger. • At Whangaroa yesterday, the schooner Frank Guy was towed out from the sawmills to sea by the ss. Clansman. The Frank Guy has a cargo of 150,000 feet timber for Sydney, and takes as passengers Mr. G. Irving and family, and others. The well - known East Coast trading schooner Waiapu arrived at 11.30 a.m. yesterday from Gisborne and adjacent ports, with a general cargo of produce, etc. She left Gisborne on July 23rd, and experienced easterly and north-easterly breezes during the trip. She called at Tologa Bay, Awanui, Waipiro, Tokomaru, Kawakawa, and Te Kaha, sailing from the last-named early on the 31st July. Cape Colville was rounded at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and harbour made, and vessel berthed at the Queen-street Wharf as above. The brigantine Ika Vuka, Captain Robinson, was yesterday entered out for Tonga via Greymouth. She will sail in a day or so. In consequence of her not leaving Hobart till Sunday the R.M.s. Coptic is not expected to arrive here by her agents, Messrs. Cruickshank and Co., until late on Thursday night or early on Friday morning. Specifications have recently been issued and tenders invited for the vessels required for the Australian federal squadron, and which are to be completed within three years. The details of the specifications, however, ere to be regarded as a secret. Ihe mail steamer Zealandia left 'Frisco for Auckland on her contract date, July 28, and is therefore due here on the 18th inst.
