THE REREDOS AT ST. PAUL'S.

The Bishop of London having vetoed the representation which was made to him under the Public Worship Regulation Act by Mr. J. 1). Allcroft, J.!'., Mr. James Houldsworth, J.P., Lieut.-General Sir Robert Phayre, K.C.8., and Mr. J. W. Williamson, and having refused to comply with the memorial of the Church Association signed by 9000 churchmen in his diocese, it has been decided to apply to tho Court of Queen's Bench for a mandamus to compel the Bishop to allow the case to go forward, on the ground that the reasons which the Bishop is required to give under the Public Worship Regulation Act, and has given, are insutlicient and unreasonable. Sir Henry James has been retained on behalf of the promoters. At a meeting of the Court of Aldermen, held lately, at which Sir F. Truscott. presided, a letter was read from Bishop Perry, the president of the London Clerical and Lay Union, forwarding a copy of a resolution of the committee of that body protesting against the rcredos recently erected in St. Paul's Cathedral, and urging its removal. The resolution has already been published. Sir Andrew Lusk suggested that the letter needed no answer and should

lie on the table. Mr. Alderman Knill said he felt bound to protest against the insinuation of idolatry which had been levelled against the church to which he belonged. Alderman Sir Henry Knight said in order to make the discussion regular, ho should move that the letter and resolution be referred to the General Purposes Committee to consider and report. Mr. Alderman Knill seconded tho rnotiou, which was carried.
