. yesterday morning early the Northern S.S. Co. Clansman arrived from her weekly trip to the North, with a large number of passengers : and i a quantity of gum and general Sproduce. During the day she discharged and reloaded, sailing for Tauranga at 8 p.m. The barque Northern Chief was yesterday cleared out for Melbourne instead of Sydney, as at first advised. Having finished ballasting, in the afternoon she was hauled a- Into the stream from the Railway Wharf, and In the evening was taken in tow by the s.s. .lona, which is to convey her to Mercury Bay, where she loads timber. The s.s. lona arrived early from the Great Barrier and sailed _ shortly after 5 o'clock for Mercury Bay, with passengers and cargo. The tenders for the redocking and repairing the barque Coulnakyle were yesterday opened by the vessel's agents, Messrs. C. F. "James and Co. There were nine tenderers, ■Whose prices ranged from £512 to £850. The ■offer of Messrs. J. Bigelow and Sons was "eventually accepted and the work will be begun at once. From Fiji the locally - owned brigantine Defiance arrived in ballast yesterday. Since last leaving Auckland the Defiance has taken a load of timber to Sydney, whence she went to Newcastle and carried a cargo of coal and machinery to Levuka where she arrived on June Bth, leaving the next day for Raki Raki, ■which was reached on the 14th. Having discharged and ballasted, she left Raki Raki on July 2nd, but did not get clear of Nandy Passage until the 12th instant, after which she experienced strong head winds till within 200 miles of the New Zealand coast. Fresh winds from the north-west then set in, and prevailed down the coast, the North Cape toeing sighted at 9 a.m. on the 26th. Tiritiri was abeam on the 27th at 11 a.m., and light •southerly airs were experienced till harbour Was made and the vessel anchored at 5 p.m. The s.s. Wellington left yesterday evening ;for Whangarei, both her freight and passenger lists being well-filled. Shortly after dark yesterday the Jubilee S.S. Co.'s Stormbird arrived from her round trip to Whangarei and north, with passengers and cargo. . The American barque Frank Stafford, when on her voyage from New York to Sydney, on March 21 passed a three-masted schooner, nismasted and abandoned, apparently quite recently, in lat. 39"8 N. andlong. 67'43 W. U-here were no signs whatever of life on her. Her foremast had gone at the deck, and there Were about 30 feet of her main and mizzen masts standing. She was made out to be the \y. Li. " hite, which was a fine large wooden three-masted schooner of 626 tons register, built a t Rockland, Maine, in 1884, by Mr. A. ■ -nines, who was also her owner.
