THE NEW MEMBER FOR ASHLEY.
I [BY TELEGRAM.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Christ-church, Friday. Mr. John Miles Verrall, whose election for the Ashley district in the House of Representatives is to he formally declared on Monday, is a farmer residing at Ohoki. He is a member of an old Sussex family, and left a very good tenant farm in England to try his fortune in Queensland, where the drought, to a great extent, affected his farming prospects, and he finally settled with his wife and family in New Zealand. In the old country he took some amount of interest in the question which he has taken tip here, namely, that of Protection and Freetradc' and since ISS6 has devoted some attention to a discussion on the question of a State bank and making provision for "cheap money.'' lie. has also taken an active part in the management of local governing institutions, but after publishing a paper on the condition of New Zealand, and several articles in a pamphlet, which he called the " Stockwhip," he contested the election for Ashley, last year, and brought his views before tlie electorate. Mr. Verrall goes up to Wellington by Saturday night's steamer, in time to join in the business of the House now in session. He says lie will determine when he reaches the seat of Government whether lie will think it worth while to .join either party of the House, though for the most part he intends to endeavour to hold the position of an j independent member. Mr. Verrall is a fairly j deliberate speaker, using notes for reference. ]
