NATIVE SCHOOLS.
PROPOSED TRANSFER TO EDUCA-
TION BOARDS.
MINISTERIAL STATEMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Thursday. In reply to Mr. R. Thompson, the Minister of Education stated that he had received no communication from the Auckland Board of Education as to taking over the native schools, but he had had Some communication with a member of that Board, Mr. Goldie. The Government intended to make an exhaustive enquiry into the state of the native schools. He believed they might with advantage and economy to the country be transferred to the control of the Education Boards.
Mr. Bruce asked if it would be in the interests of the natives, as well as of economy, to effect the transfer ? The Minister said he had no reason to believe that the Education Board would be less solicitous in looking after the welfare of the natives, than of the European children.
