[press association.] Wellington, Monday. C. J. Pownall, a well-known commission agent, died on Saturday night, aged 70. Henry Jury, aged 86, died suddenly yesterday. He was missed during the morning, and his bedroom door was Durst in, when the deceased was found in bed,' having apparently passed away in his sleep. V George McCombie, alias John McGuire, on charge of forging the name of J as. McMenamen, sheep farmer, to a cheque for £6 10s, was to-day committed for trial. ■ In the Supreme Court to-day the case, Barnes v. Drs. Gillon and Johnston, was heard. The claim was for £300 as damages for wrongful treatment of plaintiff by defendants while in their charge in the Wellington Hospital in 1879. After hearing evidence Mr. Justice Richmond decided there was no evidence to go to a- jury, and the plaintiff was nonsuited. Christchurch, Monday. Eustace Frank Allen was committed for trial to-day, charged with forging a cheque on the Union Bank, at Timaru, for £15 10s. Miss Edith Mary Rhodes, second daughter of the late R. H. Rhodes, was married at Merivale Church to-day, to Alister Clark, of Victoria. The Rev. T. Flavel performed the ceremony, which was witnessed by a crowded and fashionable congregation.
