BLOWN UP.
THE NEWCASTLE DERELICT..
DOUBTS AS TO ITS IDENTITY.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Newcastle, July 5. The derelict vessel, which has been holding by her anchors off the port for some time past, was to-day blown up by a torpedo. A large quantity of wreckage floated ashore; also some of the cargo, and from the brand on the kerosene cases the ill-fated vessel is believed to be the American ship J. T. Berry, which was bound from Philadelphia to Hiogo, a seaport town in Japan. The vessel caught fire, and was abandoned on January 2, in latitude 34deg, S., and longitude 164deg. E. It is, however, suggested that the derelict may possibly be the J. C. Lichfield, now overdue from Boston.
