RAILWAY MATTERS.
MORE DISMISSALS OF AUCKLAND EMPLOYEES. THE MIDLAND COMPANY. LETTER FROM SIR J. VOGEL. THE CHARGES FOR FRUItf. [BY TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL correspondent.] Wellington, Saturday. AUCKLAND RAILWAY DEPARTMENT. :.' I understand a number of railway employ are to be dismissed this week in the Auckland Railway Department, there being no -work for them. They will each receive a week's wages. THE MIDLAND RAILWAY. Letters received from Sir J. Vogel state that there will be no difficulty in the Midland Railway Co. getting the necessary capital for their enterprise if once the contract is definitely concluded, and on satisfactory terms. The company is said to be very favourably disposed to the adoption of the Abt railway system for negotiating the Alpine ranges, but I have reason to believe the Government will : listen to or accept no system which will not be practically workable for the carrying on of ordinary mineral traffic. THE RAILWAY FRUIT TARIFF. Some of the Auckland members declared that there are no less than five rates for the carriage of fruit. It is generally supposed to be carried under class E, but as the minimum under that is two tons, a good deal would be under class D. Up to three and three-quarters itisclassed as small lots, on which a higher rate' is charged. Again, it is said the fruit from places 40 miles from Auckland, on the Waikato line, is charged 25 per cent, higher rates than the same distance on the Helensville line. Empties are also charged for. These anomalies will bo brought under the notice of the Minister of Public Works.
