THE WRECK OF THE HAWEA
UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH FOR ROCKS.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—,»RESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth:, Saturday. A survey of the harbour wa3 made yesterday by a diver named Bell, under the Collector of Customs' supervision ; and Messrs. J. C. George, Rhind, Captain Holford, and others were out in boats looking on. The whole extent of the harbour for some distance on each side of the beacon was thoroughly walked by the diver in depths of water ra; ging from 19 feet to 23 feet, but not a took could be found. He states that the bottor< was uniformly level, devoid of all ridges and rocks, and that although he pierce ' *ao sand three feet in places, he could iind no rocky bottom. The Bteamer breaking up so quickly in smooth water suggests that something must have been wrong with the vessel or she would never havo gone to pieces in the manner ishe has. A part of the deck and much of the woodwork and floatable cargo has been found along the coast to thesonfch, as far as Opunake, which shows that the outward current is in that direction.
