RETRENCHMENT IN EDUCATION.
As notified in another column, a public meeting will be held at the City Hall tonight, commencing at eight o'clock, under the presidency of His Worship tho Mayer, for the purpose of considering the question of retrenchment in the cost of public education. We understand that it is proposed to submit as two questions the resolution submitted on the subject at the public meeting on Monday last; first the raising of the school age to seven years, and second the ending of free education with the fourth standard. We learn that Sir William Fox, who is one of the oldest and etaunchest friends of education In the colony, and who had much to do with the creation of the present system, being entirely in sympathy with the reform proposed, will support one of tho resolutions. A number of other well-known gentlemen and educationists will take part in tho proceedings. As already intimated, the gallery of the City Hall will be reserved for ladies and friends who may accompany them. The chair will be taken at eighb o'clock sharp.
