BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board of Education met yesterday, when there were present:—Messrs. J. H. Upton (presiding), R. Udy, S. Luke, J. M. Lennox, J. W. Carr, and T. Cooper.

Temporary Arrangements.—The Chairman reported that the following temporary arrangements had been made :Mr. G. F. Grierson to take charge of the Pakuranga school, pending the arrival of the teacher; Mr. L. C. Marshall to take temporary charge of the Avondale school for one month, in the absence of tho headmaster ; Mr. C. A. Lane, probationer, to take temporary charge of the Upper Matakana school, ponding the appointment of a teacher. The report was adopted. Training College Visiting Committee. —The Training College Visiting Committee reported as follows Pupil teachers' examination : Your committee have directed that the writing shall bo judged from the composition papers set at the present examination, and the supervisors at Auckland, Thames, and Hamilton have been instructed accordingly. Employment : Your committee have notified the ton pupil teachers whoso engagements were extended to 30th Juno that their services will bo continued until the olst July. The report was adopted. The Use op School Buildings.—Tho following letter was recoivod from the Education Department:—"The Department having lately been called upon to provide money for the re-building of a schoolroom by a fire which in all probability was a consequence of the holding of a dance in the room on the evening of the occurrence, I am instructed to ask your Board to bo so good as to let the committees know that the Minister for Education strongly disapproves of the granting of permission to use school buildings for purposes of mere amusement. Wm. Jas. Harens." The Board decided to forward copies of this letter to the several committees.

Fire-ligiiting Account.The Paparata School Committee forwarded the following query, as different opinions were hold by the committee upon the subject:—Can the school committee pay the fire-light ing account out of the capitation money—that is, would the payment be legal, if made? It was resolved to reply that a payment from tho capitation fund for fuel would be legal ? Miscellaneous. —It was resolved to grant £5 to the Henderson's Mill Committee for tho erection of a shed, and repairs to tho fence at the schoolground. The sum of £4 17s 6d, for repairs to teacher's houso, etc., at Katikati North, was granted. Tho consideration of the question of painting the Kaurihohore school was deferred. An application for repairs to the roof of tho teacher's house at Patumahoe was referred to the committee of tho district.

Appointments. following appointments were made : Fakarau School, Mr. Olsen; Waikiekie, Mr. Parry ; Kaipara Flats, Miss P. Young; Pokeno Hill, Miss Hungerford (subject to the approval of tho committee) Upper Waihou, Mr. Smart; Mareretu, Miss Devine's appointment was confirmed. Removal of assistant teachers were authorised as follows : Misses Best and Gilbert to city schools, Mr. Walker to Epsom, Mr. Ramsay to Mount Albert, Miss E. Qtiinn to Waiotahi. A number of other appointments, &c., were considered in committee.
