London, June 28. A match between the Australian Eleven and the North of England.commenced today at Manchester. Heavy rain fell the previous night, and the weather to-day was very cola and showery. The North of England captain won the toss, and elected to bat. The wicket was all in favour of the bowlers, and tho first innings of the Englishmen closed for 93 : Sugg, 29 ; Barlow, '23 ; Briggs, IS. Ferris secured five wickets for 38 ; Turner, four for 35 ; Boyle, one for 12. At the close of the day's play the Australians had lost five wickets for 55. Tho following were the Australians' scores :—Macdonnell, 5 ; Bannerman, not out, 9 ; Trott, IS, Bonnor, 3; Jams, 12; Blackham, 2; Turner, not out, 3 ; sundries, 3. About 3000 spectators were present during the day's play. The match against the Gentlemen of Scotland, fixed for the 12th of July, at Edinburgh, has fallen through, and a match has been fixed for that date at Stoke between the Australian Eleven and an eleven of England.
