THE NATIVE LAND BILL.
A correspondent writes from Maketu, Bay of Plenty :—The natives of the Bay of Plenty, Rotoraa, and Taupo are to have a monster meeting here on the 10th July, for the purpose of discussing the Native Land Bill now before Parliament. So far as I can learn the feeling of the Maoris is very strong against it. The object of the meeting now convened is to prepare a petition to be signed by the whole imtive population protesting against the Bill, in fact, they are determined to oppose it to the bitter end. They look upon it as an act of injustice and oppression, and in direct contravention of the Treaty of Waitangi. They say that rather than pay the rates and taxes the law may seize their land and properties. I feel sure that a new native trouble will be the result if this Bill is carried. Parliament ought, I think, before passing such an Act to ascertain the feeling of the whole native population on the matter. By so doing an infinite amount of trouble, and, I may go as far as to say, bloodshed, will be avoided
