The Chester Chronicle of May 5 says " Another discovery of gold has been made in North Wales which promises to eclipse the possibilities of Mr. Morgan's famous mine near Dolgelly. It appears that some miners were engaged quarrying near Festiniog, about thirty miles from Dolgelly, when they excavated some quartz sprinkled with golden-coloured specks, which were in due course submitted for analysis to Mr. Lowe, R.S.M., F.1.C., Public Analyst for Chester, who pronounced them to be gold, but not a very rich specimen. Other samples were sent and analysed, with the same effect, when Mr. Lowe was invited to go to Festiniog and personally inspect the place. He did so, and after a careful survey of the geological features of the district, he instructed the miners to open a reef at a point which he indicated, and they almost immediately came- upon some magnificent specimens! of gold quartz. A good-sized piece of the stuff was retained, and subsequently forwarded to Mr. Lowe for analysis, and he found that it produced five ounce? of gold to the ton of quartz. This extraordinary rich find has created much excitement throughout the district."
