DROWNED AT SEA.
By the arrival of the schooner Lirjeie Guy yesterday intelligence was brought to town of the death of a young man named Jatncn Shaw, one of the vessel's crow, who fell overboard on the morning of the 19th insfc., and was drowned. Captain Stevens report* that Shaw had been on wateh and at the wheel on the morning of the accident, being relieved shortly after two o'clock. It is surmised that in moving away from the wheel Shaw tripped over the rudder chains, as his shipmate saw him stumble and then fall backwards over the stern, where the bulwarks are kiw, and without life lines. The alarm of "man overboard " was quickly raised, and the vessel being hove-to a boat was quickly lowered, bnt though the crew pulled about for a long time, and were nearly swamped, no sign of the unfortunate young sailor was found, and they had reluctantly to return without him. Captain Stevens and the deceased's shipmates speak in high terms of their late comrade, and express deep regret at his untimely death. Shaw was a native of Rangiora (Canterbury), where his parents still reside. Captain Stevens has written to them, informins them of the circumstances of the young man's death.
