OBITUARY.
MR. GEORGE WHITELAW. | j We regret to announce the death of Mr. CJeorge Whitelaw, who, for the past ten years, ha 3 occupied tho position of inspector's accountant in the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Whitelaw died at his residence, Cameron-street, Ponsonby, yesterday morning, a few minutes past four o'clock. For many years he suffered from cheFt complaint, which malady eventually caused his death, after being confined to his room for the past seven week?. Mr. Whitelaw arrived in Auckland in the early part of IS7S, having been advised to seek a more genial climate than that of the old country. Prior to coming to thifl colony he held an important position in. the National Bank of Scotland" and wan afterwards appointed eecretary to tho United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. He was a man of exceptional attainments, and was much esteemed by those who were intimate with him. Mr. Whitelaw, who was 51 years of age, leaves a widow and several sons and daughters to mourn their loss. His remains are to be interred bo-morrow, the funeral leaving his late residence at two o'clock p.m. for tho Waikomiti Cemetery. MR. S. J. EDMONDS. Mr. S. J. Edmonds, a well-known Auckland citizen of many years' reputation, died yesterday afternoon at his residence Id Graham-street. On Sunday, the 10th instant, Mr. Edmonds caught cold, and was attacked by paralysis, and though he rallied during the week he suddenly grew worse yesterday morning, when congestion of the lungs set in, and he died at half-past two p.m. The deceased was a native of Yorkshire, and came to the colony at nn earlv age. He served in the militia during the 'kew Zealand war, and was present at tho sacking of Kororareka, when he owned the schooner Kate, which figures in the bistory of that event. Mr. Edmonds was Hi able Maori scholar, and at one period acted an Government interpreter, whilst he was also editor of the Maori newspajxsr Korimako. He conducted business as a kauri gum merchant in this city for many yea.re. A widow and peveral eone and daughters mourn the loss of tho deceased.
MR. H. RIDINGS. Another old colonist died yesterday in the person of Mr. Henry Ridings, aenr., who passed away at his residence, Newton Roaa, at half-past seven a.m., from cancer of the throat. Mr. Ridings was born ab Cork on the 18th of June, ISI6, so that he died on tho anniversary of his birth. In the latter part of the year 1855 ho left his native place and sailed for Victoria, in the ship Champion of the Seas, but he did not remain long in Australia, and he lunded in thia city irom tho ship Gazelle in 18.56, when he entered into tho service of Connoll and Ridings, auctioneers, and subsequently carried on the business for some time in partnership with thelate Mr. Walter Dowden. The deceased latterly fulfilled the dutiew of Returning Officer for the city for a conadorable period. Mr. Ridings, who waa 74 years of age, leaves a widow and three eons and five daughters. Hie fuueral will be hold at three p, m. to-day. MRS. GOULD. Another of our old colonists, Mrs. Gould, wife of the Rev. Mr. Gould, of Obuhuhu, has passed away. She had been in illhealth during the past nine months, and had been attended by Dr. Purchas. Death resulted from an affection of the throat, to which ehe succumbed about midnight on Sunday last. Mrs. Gould arrived in Rueeell when a child six months old, and etayed there till her marriage. For the last 27 year 3 her home had been at Otahuhu. She was the mother of a family of 16 children.
