From our Melbourne correspondent, in another column, appears a very attractive glimpse of the preparations making for the great Centennial Exhibition in that city. That, in area, the structure should exceed by a third that of the great London Exhibition which was the wonder of the world six-and-twenty years ago, is an eloquent testimony to the wonderful growth of these remote dependencies 01 the Empire; and we may confidently expect that not only will it attract the attention, of the civilised world as a great and startling fact in Anglo-Saxon development, but that it will draw from every part of the world a huge concourse of people, who will take the opportunity of informing themselves with greater accuracy of the resources and capabilities of these fair and promising lands under the Southern Cross. Every day is increasing the congestion under the influence of which energy and capital are being cramped and stifled in their enterprise in the Old World; and from this time onward we may anticipate that every day will increase the longing for new fields of enterprise, where energy and capital will have greater "elbow-room." Never in the history of the Australasian colonies was a better opportunity afforded for every one 'of these colonies to display its special advantages and attractions, and never before was such display so likely to lead to immediate results, in drawing to our shores those whose capital ana enterprise are all that is needed to convert our limitless dormant resources •into factors of great and growing prosperity. For any colony to allow its hands to hang listless its side, would be treason to its best interests ; and we sincerely trust that in this great world's show it will be proved that our Islands, with their rich resources and charming climate, do not belie the promise of their yet being the' Great" Britain of the South. We believe that New Zealand will show up very creditably in this

Centennial Exhibition, which is to open on the Ist of August; but as it is intimated in our correspondent's letter that the door of the Exhibition is not yet closed, and the New Zealand Commissioner has conveyed a request, through our correspondent, that the Auckland people will send over as many exhibits as possible to afford a display of our natural products, we cordially hope that the hint will be taken. It is of the very first importance that this, which is unquestionably the most charming, as probably it is the richest in natural resources of all parts of the colony, should put on its best appearance at the Exhibition ; and, as there are many who may have overlooked the opportunity of exhibiting until they had thought the doors were closed, we would urge them to rouse themselves to action, and take steps to supplement the New Zealand court _ by a substantial addition of exhibits illustrative of the resources and industries of Auckland.
