London, June 10. A Defence • Commission has been appointed to inquire into the coast defences and the armaments needed. It includes Lord Hartington (chairman), W. H. Smith, Lord Churchill, War Secretary, Mr. Campbell-Banner man, M.P., Major-General Brackenbury, Sir Richard Temple, and Admiral Richards. Three hundred members of Parliament visited Portsmouth at. the invitation of Lord Beresford, and inspected the warships lying there, including those in course of construction.
