Dear Sir, —I went tho other evening to a spiritual seance," and having an eye to business, requested the operators to produce the spirit of Lord Tennyson. The " reading of these spiritual gentlemen having been strictly confined to the "mystics," they doubted whether the Poet Laureate was yet in the land of the spirits. However, on tho consideration that if ho wore not there he could not reply to them, they at last went to work, and were rewarded with a hearty " rap." On being asked what I wanted, I requested the "spirit" to make mo a poem, setting forth the virtues of my BALLOON BRAND BAKING POWDER. "Thou, with a vigour than naught could excel," he rapped out the following rhymes, which, if not equal to Tennyson at his best, are, I think you will admit, better than anything ho has written lately. Please notice that this poem (?) is the first tangible result of nearly half a century of vigorous "spiritrapping," and, as such, is an object of groat interest. And I have to congratulate tho Spiritualists tnat thoir long patience and perseverance are at last amply rewarded. Come into the kitchen, Maude, For the white-capped cook has flown ; Come into the kitchen, Maude, I am hero by the fire alone, - And the odour of spices is wafted abroad Like the scent of a rose newly-blown. For tho quiet of evening dwells In this temple of Soyer's art, And we hear the sound of the evening bells Rise over dwelling and mart— The sad swoot sounds of tho evening bells, Soothing the wounded heart. All day has this " temple" heard Tho sounds of tho roast and the fry, All day has tho heavy air been stirred ' By the odour of pudding and pio ; Till a silence fell with the butler's word And a HUSH with the footman's cry. [Note. —The butler's word, is siipposed to be "Dinner's served, m'lady." Editor.] I said to the lazy, there is not one With whom you can have your way, Now you must loam to travel alone, No longer with me you stay. Now half to the " Rising Sun" have gone And half to enjoy the " play"— Low in his tastes, and loud in his tone, Tho last rogue hastens away. So bring me some salt and flour, And some " Powder" branded "BALLOON," Some sugar and milk (not sour), * Butter and spico and a spoon, And see what I'll make in an hour With tho,'' Powder" that's branded BALLOON." * * « * * It is rising, my own, my sweet, Was ever such airy bread ? Such fairy pastry would be a treat To Death on his own death-bed; And Death On his own death-bed Would quickly regain his feet, And drawing near with his " silent tread," Would lay down his dart and retreat. . * » * * * Human nature could stand no more. The many thousand " raps" that it took to rap out this doggerel had prostrated four long-haired mediums and a hysterical young lady of fifty summers. They are still in the asylum, but we hope shortly to hear of their recovery.— am, dear sir, your obedient servant, JOHN H. HUDSON, BALLOON BRAND BAKING POWDER DEPOT, VICTORIA AND HOBSON STS., " Auckland. Sold by all Grocers : 2s 6d, is 6d, and Is per Tin. ' CIRCULATING LIBRARY OF NEW BOOKS. Established 1884.
