A SERIES OF ACCIDENTS.

A YOUNG GIRL SEVERELY BURNED.

A painful accident occurred yesterday morning at the Shirt Manufacturing Company's premises, Great North Road, when a young girl named Eliza Beeston, 17 years of age, was seriously burned through her dress catehing fire. Miss Boeston, who is employed at the factory as a boxmaker, was engaged in an upstairs room in heating a quantity of gluo, and she had occasion to turn for a moment, when the fire suddenly caught the back of the skirt which she was wearing. The girl immediately lost her presence of mind and ran down the stairway, the draught feeding the flames, but when sh» reached the lower floor Mrs. Jackson, the forewoman, at once seized her, and after some difficulty extinguished the flames, though not until the girl had been severely burned on the legs and back. The occurrence transpired so quickly that a fellowworkwoman of Miss Beeston, who was in the room upstairs, knew nothing of the matter for some time. Dr. Mackellar, who had been sent for by Mrs. Jackson, dressed the injuries, not, however, pronouncing them dangerous, and the girl was removed to the Hospital. Yesterday evening a mishap occurred to a carrier named Goldsborough at Newmarket. He had alighted from his cart, and while in the act of getting in again his foot slipped, and the horse moving on caused the wheel to pass over Goldsborough, crushing his side. He was promptly picked up by some bystandere who witnessed the accident, and medical assistance was sent for. Drs. E. G. Leger Erson and Coom speedily arrived, and examined Goldsborough, ascertaining that his injuries consisted of two broken ribs and some contusions. Considering the nature of the accident, the man was fortunate in escaping without serious internal hurt.

Another accident happened in Lower Queen-street about three o'clock, by which a young man named Alexander McAneny received a severe shaking and bruising. Ho was driving up from the Wharf in a cart belonging to Messrs. Earl and Montgomery, and when opposite the Waitemata Hotel, the wheel-tire became jammed in the tramline points, causing the vehicle to tilt suddenly and throwing McAneny out over the back with some violence. He was partially atunned, but being picked up by Constable Russell and Mr. F. J. Shortt, was taken to tholatter'sshop, whereheshortly recovered and went home. The horse continued up the street and collided with a hansom cab belonging to William Faulkiner, which was on the stand ab Fort-etreet, with the result that the cart turned over, and Faulkiner's horse bolted with his hansom. The latter animal was quickly stopped, however, by a carter named Thos. Smith. Messrs Earl and Montgomery's cart had one of its shafts snapped, while Faulkiner'e hansom was severely strained, and had its springs and lamps broken, but both horses escaped without injury. No blame is attachable to McAnony for the accident, as he was driving alowly and steadily when it occurred.
