COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. The Customs receipts to-day amounted to £1423 l(ss.

Interest in the tariffs effect upon prices lias been eclipsed by the fixing up of the new Kauri Timber Company, now of paramount importance as a potentiality in regard to provincial trade. Our other columns enter fully into the largeness of the undertaking. It is understood that each share will represent £10,000. The release of so much locked-up capital is expected to have a very beneficial effect upon the financial position. The import trade is all at sixes and sevens, owing to the upset of old established quotations, and much of the business done is now in good faith that the prices are a fair advance, many buyers not being in a position to calculate the ad valorem and primage duty. Transactions of a wholesale character arc limited. We hear of several sales of salt at a full price. A full line of sago has been placed at current rates.

Rice is in short supply, holders not caring to do much business at £13 10s in bond.

In dried fruits, prunes are in better request, and Elemes are somewhat firmer.

The enormous rise in the value of starch by the increased duty of £15 13s 4d per ton ought to satisfy the most ardent protectionist, and if starch factories are not established under such a tariff advantage, New Zealanders will have lost their enterprise. Kerosene has been placed in several wholesale lines, the White Rose brand being in strong demand. The winter consumption of cocoa has led to sales of Fry's in some large lots. Salt butter of good quality is sought after, and sales freely made at 7d. There is also a better enquiry for cheese. The sugar market presents no new features, except that China whites are being placed more freely. The opening of the China tea market meets with little observation. Good teas are exceedingly short, and in the face of a new season, few wholesalers care to buy at the present high rates, consequently the trade supply is somewhat of a makeshift character. Isew maize, very little is arriving, and more is required for immediate wants. The price for parcels in good order is 2s Id ; old maize, 3s 6d nominal. Southern potatoes, 555; local, 455. Fowl wheat, 2s 9d ; milling, local, 3s Id ; Southern, 3s 4d. Oats, bright feed, 2s 3d to 2s 4d. In the local market, the prices remain almost the same as last week. Eggs are Is per dozen wholesale and Is 3d per dozen retail. The best dairy butter is still scarce, and is worth Is per lb wholesale and Is 3d per lb retail. The *' shell" brand has advanced to Is 3d per lb wholesale. The Waikato " anchor " brand has been raised to Is 3d per lb wholesale, and the "Crown" brand to Is per lb wholesale. KAURI GUM MARKET. This market continues quiet and unchanged. Supplies for the month of May were 630 tons, and for six days of June, about 130 tons. We quote :—Fair ordinary, 31s to 325; best ordinary, 33s to 355; East Coast, 44s to 455. LIVE STOCK & PRODUCE MARKETS. AUCKLAND Messrs. There was an average muster at the Durham Yards on Friday, but bidding was slow for most of the lots offered, which were scarcely good enough for requirements, and there remained an unsatisfied demand for good, upstanding young horses. We quote : Hacks, £4 to £15 5s ; lightharness horses, £6 to £10 IDs; heavy draught, £10 to £18. Store stock have been in much better request, and the demand for steers was particularly active. Dairy cows, if young and at their profit, were also well competed for.
