EVIL OF GAMBLING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— was much pleased with the speech of the chairman (Mr. E. Withy, M.H.R.) at the public meeting, held in the Tabernacle, to advance the preparation of a petition praying that our Government and legislators do remove the sanction of Parliament to gambling ; but I was far better pleased with the speech of Professor Aldis ; and I say that it is altogether inconsistent for our ministers to pray to our legislators that they remove the sanction of Parliament of gambling, whilst they themselves show encouragement to it in every event of need in connection with their churches. And to think that not one of them but the Rev. Mr. Munro spoke against it. The system under which church bazaars are carried on is anything but honest. How, then, can we look for the blessing of God to follow anything of the kind ? No. Let all—both ministers and the members of their churches examine their own hearts, and seek the Holy Spirit of God to enable them to cleanse themselves. Then, and then alone, we may look for reform. Sir, I might go much deeper into the matter of gambling— to wit, deception of trade in every transaction in our daily life. I entreat of all professing Christian storekeepers, - &c., to turn anew leaf, so that their hearts may be at ease.— &c., A. McDonald. Pukekohe Valley.
