A CASE FOR ENQUIRY.
Our Otahuhu correspondent writes :—"Had tho officer who represents the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals been at Penrose Junction on Tuesday morning, when the Mercer train reached there, he would have found cause for indulging in righteous indignation at the sight wliich was commented on in severe terms by several who witnessed it, viz., a crate so crammed full of helpless sheep that there could not possibly be standing room. Four of them were lying on their backs and appeared to be dead, and had been so severely tramped that the wool was torn off and exposed a blackened and bruised mass of flesh to the glare of the sun, and the hoofs of its panting companions standing restlessly over them. It was simply sickening. The trucks were I. 521 and 519, and I hope that this will be the means of enabling the matter being enquired into, as I feel sure that the management would not for one moment tolerate either the cupidity or negligence tiiat would subject poor dumb animals to such brutal and unwarrantable treatment."
