THE GOLDFIELDS.

PROSPECTING IN THE ROTORUA DISTRICT. [bt telegraph.—own correspondent.] Rotorua, Wednesday. No further developments of the Horohoro gold discovery have ocourred since my last, but Mr. Karl and party continue at work in the supposed direction of the reef. The Herald's and Mr. Pond's reports have had •the effect of allaying any undue excitement on the subject, while giving sufficient grounds for pursuing prospecting throughout the district, and which, in all probability, will result in important mineral deposits being found.. ■ " Walker's prospecting 1 party are in the neighbourhood of Titiraupenga and Hurakia, . while Roper and party ; are in the ranges east of Galatea ana Runanga. 1 • s .

' The winze on the new leader in the footwall of Mo. 6 leader is down a depth of 21 feet. The leader in the bottom of the winze is about 4 inches in thickness. Gold was seen freely through the quartz when breaking down the leader today. Seventy-four loads of quartz have been crushed during the week for the return of 2570z of amalgam; In addition, tailings berdaned yielded lloz amalgam. The battery, winding engine, and air-compressor are in good working order. The mine manager wired yesterday <—" Drive west on main reef holed to drive put in on main reef from No. 7 drive."

New Alburnia.—During the past week the drive on No. 2 hangingwall lode, battery level, has been advanced 10 feet. The timber has also been put in, and the leading stope carried along a distance of 15 feet. The quartz was broken down in the stope on Saturday afternoon and about 71b of fair picked stone were obtained. The quartz from the drive also showed gold. There are now about six loads of quartz in the paddock, and 161b of picked stone on hand. Jobe and party will finish crushing on Thursday. The dirt is shaping for 4oz to the load, picked stone (1001b) included. Christie and party will clean up to-morrow. Climo and party will forward 10 loads to the mill this week. Irwin and party are breaking fair crushing dirt on Success reef. Henderson and party are also hreaking out fair crushing dirt from the footwall vein of Success reef, " Whau " level. Saxon.—The drive on the hanging wall reef has been extended 9 feet during the past week. The reef is small, but a little gold is showing in it. In the leading stope, the reef is about 1 foot wide. " In the second and third topes there are 18 inches of crushing dirt, in which gold is frequently seen, and the mineral is of a favourable description. In the fourth stope, which has been advanced 10 feet, the reef is also 18 inches thick and very similar to the stopea below.it. The fourth stope hillward of rise on the footwall reef is 25 feet and the fifth stope 80 feet from the boundary, the reef in each about 1 foot in thickness, and showing gold occasionally. The sixth stope is 122 feet and seventh stope 74 feet in from rise. The reef in these two stopes is about 20 inches thick, carrying good mineral and showing good colours of gold. Jo. 1 winze is down 31 feet, the reef in the bottom is about 2% feet thick, and maintains its favourable character, good mineral very plentiful, and gold freely seen in the quartz. The second winze has-been discontinued on account of water. This was not unexpected, as it is inside the second break, which forms a dam, and keeps the water from draining away. Another trial will be made in a day or two. A stope is being carried along No. 1 footwall leader, which iB three or four inches thick, and shows strong colours of gold. The amount of amalgam on band to date is 11230z 15dwts. Plate amalgam at the Prince battery yet to be cleaned. Above No. 3 level two stopes are in progress; the reef is 20 inches in thickness, ana gold is occasionally seen.
