WINDING UP IN THE COUNTY

On February 9, at tho Clerkenwell County Court, the case of Eayres v. Hunt was heard by His Honor Judge Eddis. The plaintiff, Albert Eayres, a clerk, lived at 25, Dalmeny Road, Holloway, and he sued Miss Hannah Hunt, an assistant at a draper's shop in the Seven Sisters Road, for £'2 Ss, the value of articles alleged to have been unlawfully detained. The pair, after being engaged, quarrelled. It was agreed that all presents should be returned on both sides. " 1 claim —.>s, said Mr. Eayres, " for a diamond ring, which she hasn't returned. But," he added, "this wasn't a gift at all. One evening I met her as usual, returning from business, and showed her the ring. She took a fancy to it, put it 011 her linger, and never returned it. 1 also claim l'Js (id, which I paid for enamelling a crown piece, which she wore as a brooch." The defendant gave quito a different version* of the affair. "He gave me the ring, sir, and placed it 011 my finger himself," assurred the judge. " I certainly expressed a wish to have the crown piece enamelled, and he at once offered to get. it done. What, do you think, sir? After the engagement was broken oil the plaintiff sent me a bill amounting to over t'H for various presents he had made me. ' "What," here asked Eayres, "have you done with my letters ?" " Burnt them," exclaimed the young lady, indignantly, amid a burst, of laughter; "they were not worth keeping—a pack of lies." Plaintiff then asked her, " Did I ever say that the ring was intended for you?" "Yes, you did,' she replied, amid renewed laughter ; "you bought it for me. Had you mentioned a price, or said that the ring was only lent to me, I should have thrown it at you." His Honor in the end gave a verdict, for the defendant, and allowed her the usual costs.
