THE FIGHT BETWEEN LAING AND MATTHEWS.
THE STAKES PAID TO LAING. Although, by the interference of the police and the stoppage of the glove contest after it had lasted only a few minutes, the match sVould, according to the conditions have been fought out and decided before either party could claim the stakes, we learn that "ho money (£SO) has been paid over to Laing by the backers of Matthews. Mr. Chaafe, who backed and trained Matthews, declared that it was obvious that he was completely beaten and was not able to stand up before Laing, and that therefore the stakes should be paid over. It is said, indeed, that Matthews suffered so badly in his previous contest with Laing that his spine is affected, and that he is not fit to go into the ring against any competitor, let alone such a formidable boxer as Laing. If it be so that he has been permanently injured, we hope Matthews will withdraw from these contests at once.
