UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE.
VICTORY FOR CAMBRIDGE.
[press association.]
London, March 24. The Cambridge-Oxford boat race was won by Cambridge by live lengths. Cambridge led at the start, and kept ahead throughout the race. Time, 20min 3secs. The weather was foggy.
Messrs. Landale and Hawthron Reel, Australians, rowed fourth and sixth respectively in the Cambridge boat.
This makes the third consecutive victory for Cambridge, which carried off the race in ISB6 and 1887. Since 1829, when the fixture originated, forty-five matches have been rowed, of which Oxford has won 23 and Cambridge 21, the race of 1877 resulting in a dead heat. The time, 20min Ssec, is the fastest in which the Putney-Mortlake course has been rowed in eight-oared gigs, the record hitherto being that of 1869, when the distance was accomplished in 20min 3sec. Last year's time over the same course was 20min 52sec.
