ATTENDANCE OF MAORI CHILDREN AT SCHOOL.
[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Rotorua, Saturday. The query relative to tho admission of Maori pupils into the European school was stated at a special meeting of the committee, held yesterday. The Auckland Board had been appealed to for a decision on this subject, and the reply, which was not altogether satisfactory or decisive, referred the committee to sections 10, 87, and 74 of the Act, the latter of which states that local committees shall have control of all educational matters within the district, subject to the control of the Board and the supervision of an inspector. The committee passed the following resolution:—"That the teacher be instructed to admit no Maori pupils in the future, so as to enable them to attend the native school already provided by the Government for their use." The Chairman, Mr. Johnson, objected to this resolution before it was put, on the grounds of its being in violation of the Act, and vacated the chair, stating that he disclaimed all responsibility in the matter. Mr. Brent was elected in his place, and the resolution was then carried.
