Considerable interest was taken in the contest, and when the poll closed at six p. m. a large crowd assembled to await the result, which, however, was not declared till a few minutes past seven, when Mr. Thomas Seaman, the Returning Officer, raised the window of the room in which the returns had been made up, and announced the numbers to be as follows :— George Taylor ... ... 115 Thomas Frost 110 JohnO'Hara 110 Joseph Han lan 110 Robert Somers ... ... 107 James Radcliffe, 72 W. J. McDermotfc, 69 : J. T. B. Dines, 67 ; Thomas Hodgson, 66 ;. Henry Thompson, 65. Three informal votes were recorded.
