CEMETERIES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, Referring to Mr. J. A. Connell's letter on cemeteries, it is wisely provided in the Cemeteries Act that there shall be no burying place allowed within boroughs. The fault found with the Waikomiti Cemetery appears to be only that it is bleak and distant. With a railway a few miles is of no great importance, but, as the city and its environs grow, a positive advantage. As regards its bleakness, this would probably be the case in any new ground, and the evil is daily getting less, as the City Council are spendingl large sums in planting trees ana providing conveniences. Probably not less than £4000 have already been spent. Would it not be better for those who seek as a remedy to dot all over the suburbs burialgrounds, with the consequent deterioration of adjacent property, water supply, etc., to unite in seeking to make Waikomiti more easily approachable by more frequent trains and cheaper rates, while the Council could be urged to continue the planting? This could be done by united pressure of
public opinion being brought to bear on the Government, for the more rapid and regular railway communication, and to the City Council for the beautifying the cemetery grounds. In reality, too often the cry for , additional cemeteries comes from those who seek (as usual) to benefit humanity (?) by selling their land at a good price.—lam, &c., Practical.
