PONSONBY RESERVOIR No. 2.

TO the editor. Sir,— your kind permission I wil: reply to the local in last Saturday's. Herald, where it is stated that the waterworks engineer reports to the City Council that No. 2 Reservoir has been filled to within one inch of the overflow. It reads well, but needs serious practical explanation, as I will endeavour to show. Let me honestly assure you, I have no object to serve whatever, beyond my interest as a heavilytaxed ratepayer. The old and new reservoirs are on a level at the surface, also the overflow referred to is placed in the old reservoir, and is merely a gap cub out of the side, about one foot six inches deep from the extreme top. Now, as the greatest depth of water in the new reservoir yet reported as being 26 feet 8 inches, and it is capable of holding 30 feet, there is ab least two feet, instead of one inch, to be accounted for before reaching the overflow. Besides, by screwing down the valve which connects the two reservoirs, near the bottom, the new one can be tested to its full capacity without touching the coveted overflow. Let this be done, and the object of my previous letter to you will be gained —I am, &c. Barney Maglone. '
