' The change in the wind on Saturday was jyery welcome to the skippers of several sailing vessels, which have for the past three or four days been awaiting a chance to clear, and finite a general exodus was made on Saturday forenoon, the barques Mary A. Greenwood and Sharpshooter, the brig Syren, and the schooners Sandfly, Daisy, and Curlew, all Itaking their departure. The first named went out in tow of the Awhina as far as Kangitoto Reef, whence she started under pail for her voyage to New York with a valuable cargo of gum. On Saturday evening the Sharpshooter, owing to the wind being adverse and the heavy sea and thick weather that set in, put back and anchored in the channel, under the lee of Rangitoto. The Sandfly proceeds to Rarotonga to take the place of the Atlantic, recently lost, and under the command of Captain Harris will trade under the well-known flag of Messrs. Donald and Edenborough. The schooner Daisy left for Vavau and Apia with a cargo of general merchandise, and will also proceed further afield among the islands. Mr. fjvansen, lately chief officer of the s.s. 'Stormbird, has taken charge of the schooner Curlew, and will conduct her to Mercury JBay, where she is to take in 25,000 feet of timber for Gisborne in addition to 6000 feet loaded in Auckland. , From Norfolk Island yesterday the island trader Waiwera came into port with a cargo of bananas, fungus, hides, and bones. Capt. -Buike reports that he left the island on the $th inst., made Cape Brett on the 10th, and arrived as above, having had strong winds Storing the passage. I Among the arrivals on Saturday night was the schooner Defiance, with a full cargo of Small coal from Newcastle. She left on the 22nd ultimo, and experienced heavy northwesterly and northerly gales, until sighting .the Three Kings on Friday morning last, Whence she had strong winds from the same direction to port. In beating up the harbour the schooner bumped into the mission schooner Southern Cross lying at anchor off fit. George's Bay, which had no light burning, »nd injured some of her forward gear. On the 29th February the Union S.S. Co.'s Steamer Southern Cross, which has been for feome time past engaged in the inter-island Jtrade in the Fiji Group, left for Auckland, arriving yesterday at 8 o'clock. To the purser we are indebted for the latest Fijian pies and the following report: The Southern JCross left Levuka on the 29th of February, and arrived at Ba the same day, where she took in 168 tons of sugar. Ba was left on the End of March, and since that day nothing but » succession of heavy gales were experienced, and on two occasions the steamer had to be hove-to on account of the high seas running. U.he Poor Knights were sighted on the 10th Instant, at 3 p.m., and harbour was made, and the vessel anchored off the Sugarworks as mentioned above. When she has completedjher discharge, it is expected that the ■ - ■ ' .. ■■■«- ... • "

Southern Cross will proceed to Dunedin. where she will undergo a thorough overhaul and refitting. , • , . At a quarter-post eleven yesterday forenoon the steamer Suva arrived from the Last Coast with passengers and cargo. Mr. Dale, purser, supplies the following particulars r—The Suva left Wellington at 8.15 p.m. on the 6th, arrived at Napier at 8.30 a.m. on the Bth : left again at 3.30 p.m. on the same day, arrived at Gisborne at 4 a.m. on the 9th ; left again at 8 a.m., called in at Tologa Bay, Tuparoa, Awanui, Hick's Bay and Oreti Point, left the latter port at 8.15 a.m. on the 10th and arrived in Auckland as above. Experienced strong N.E. winds and heavy seas from \\ ellington to Oreti Point, thence strong head winds and high sea to arrival. • On Saturday forenoon the barque William Turner, having completed the discharge of her cargo of raw sugar, dropped down the harbour from Chelsea and took up a position in the stream opposite the wharf. { The Three Cheers having got out all her inward cargo of coal on Saturday shifted from her berth at the Queen-street Wharf and hauled alongside the Railway Wharf. We learn "from Levuka that the barque Sir Robert Sale left Fiji for Europe with a full cargo of copra about three weeks ago. Captain Frost, well-known in Auckland shipping circles, who has been trading in Fiji waters for some years, sold his vessel, the Zephyr, and shipped as second officer in the barque.
