THE NICARAGUA CANAL. Panama, February 27. The Nicaragua Canal Bill has been agreed to by the Senate. _ The Bill provides for the construction of a ship canal across the Isthmus of "Nicaragua from the Bay of Guatemala on the Atlantic side, to Port Realejo on the Pacific side. The total length of the projected canal is 278 miles. M. PASTEUR'S SPECIFIC. Paris, February 27. M. Pasteur's latest experiments have proved completely successful. Under the chicken cholera rabbits lived one day only, fowls lived two days, whilst sheep and lambs were not in any way affected. M. Pasteur is now convinced of the superiority of his scheme for the extermination or rabbits, and is determined to spare no trouble or expense to have it properly submitted to the authorities of New South Wales, with a view of securing the £25,000 offered by the Government of that colony. Three delegates from M. Pasteur, who fully understand his scheme, will leave for Australia by the s.s. Cuzco. THE MANLY SEMINARY. London, February 27. The Rev. Dr. Vernon, Vice-President of All Hallows College, Dublin, has visited His Holiness rope Leo XIII., and has been created a canon of the Church of Rome, with the title of Monsignor Vernon. He has been appointed rector of Manly Seminary, Sydney, founded by His Eminence Cardinal Moran in Sydney," and just completed at a cost of £80,000, and will leave almost immediately to take up the duties assigned him as principal of the seminary. RAILWAY STRIKE. New York, February 28. An extensive strike of engine-men has taken place on the Chicago and Quincey lines. Five thousand five hundred miles of lines are affected, and traffic paralysed. THE PRODUCE CLEARING HOUSE. London, February 27. The scope of the proposed London Produce Clearing House will probably include operations in wheat, tallow, and silver. EXHIBITION CANTATA. London, February 27. Mr. Cowen, recently appointed musical conductor at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition, has expressed a desire to write an Exhibition cantata himself. THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION. Paris, February 28. M. Revoil, permanent head of the Colonial Department, and four others, have been appointed French Commissioners at the Melbourne Exhibition. AN ATTACK AT WADY HALFA. Suakim, February 26. News has been received that a force of natives have attacked the military post at Wady Haifa, at the second cataract of the Nile, and have captured a lieutenant and two men. ENCROACHING- - THIBETANS WARNED. Calcutta, February 26. The Indian Government have warned the Thibetans to evacuate Sikhim immediately, but it is feared that an expedition to that State will be necessary in consequence of the raiders having been reinforced.
