[OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Thames, Monday. The committee elcctcd for the Thames North Licensing District were : Messrs. Darrow, William D. Reid, William L. Thorburn, David Pitkethley, and the Rev. S. J. Neill. The funeral of the late William C'orin, recently manager of the Caledonian mine, was numerously attended, especially by the temperance bodies. [press association.] Wanganui, Monday. A writ was served on the Herald newspaper Co. to-day, at the instance of George McCaul, executor in the Churton and Collego Estate, claiming £(500 damages for alleged libel in the publication of certain strictures in connection with the administration of the estate. A writ for a similar amount was recently served upon Mr. H. C. Field, the writer of a letter in the Herald. Wellington, Monday. The omnibus proprietors are making large additions to their plant. Yesterday afternoon and evening 3240 passengers were carried. Mr. Angus McMasters, one of the oldest settlers in the Wairarapa, died at Greytown on Saturday, aged 88. He had been in the district 47 years. Mr. J. H. Cock, of the firm of W. and G. Turnbull and Co., has been elected President of the Chamber of Commerce for the ensuing year, and Mr. E. W. Mills vice-president. A boy named J. R. Whiterod, aged 14 years, son of an engine-driver, was drowned in a waterhole near Greytown North. Dunedin, Monday. Mr. J. B. Thomson was to-day elected qhairman of the Otago Harbour Board. The Seacliff enquiry was concluded today, when Messrs Gore (contractor), Blair (Works Department), Lawson (architect), and Brindley (clerk of works), made speeches reviewing the evidence. At a meeting called to confer with Sir Jas. Hector, a committee was appointed to take steps for the proper representation of the district at the Melbourne Exhibition. The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club have voted £21 to the family of the platelayer Jeffrey, killed on the railway on Saturday. . Invercargill, Monday. A boy named Burgess was killed in Hill Bush this morning by the fall of a tree.
