In the Manchester Health Lectures for the peoplo, Dr. Ransome, Chairman of the Committee Manchester and Salford Sanitary Association, contributes a locture on "Soils and Sites," and quotes approvingly the opinion of Dr. Buchanan, Chief Medical Officer to the Manchester Local Government Board, that "Wetness of Soil is the cause of Phthisis (i.e., consumption), to the population living upon it." He also endorses Dr. llaviland's opinion that " Damp Soil is coincident with a high mortality." The Registrar General of Scotland confirmed that opinion, and added that: "Houses situated on impermeable soils, or on low-lying ground, and whose sites were consequently kept (lamp, had a very much larger number and proportion of cases of consumption than towns, villages, or houses which were situated on dry or rocky on on light porous soils, where the redundant moisture easily escaped."
