ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND AMATEUR SPORTS. The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Bicycle Club held their seventeenth carnival on the Domain Cricket Ground on Saturday afternoon. The weather was beautifully fine, and this, with the excellent programme of sports,' had the effect of attracting a very large attendance of the public, about 2000 people being present. Admiral and Mrs. Fairfax and party having returned from the Great Barrier Island in the afternoon, visited the ground during the course of the day. The committee, and the indefatigable secretary, Mr. H. H. Hayr, made abundant preparations for the successful carry-ing-out of the programme, and their arrangements were the subject of much favourable comment. The course had been securely roped off, to prevent the encroaching of the large crowd present, and thus a common cause of complaint at similar gatherings was entirely avoided, though this result was also contributed to by the efforts of Sergeant Gamble and _ a force of police, who rendered material assistance in keeping the ground free. Mr. J. M. Sibbin acted as starter of the races, Mr. J. Halyday being call steward, whilst Mr. J. E. Cook was timekeeper, and Messrs. J. H. B. Coates, R. Garrett, and J. Mahon were judges. During the afternoon the Artillery Band, under the conductorship of Mr. A. R. Hunter, played selections of music, including various operatic airs. As a rule, the sport was of a first-class description. The foot races were toughly contested, and in the majority of cases good finishes ensued ; but this cannot be said on behalf of the bicycling events, which were exceedingly tame, A. G. Clarke proving himself a veritable " Triton amongst the minnows," by winning easily the three races for which he started. He rode a light, racing machine, having in this respect a great advantage over many of his opponents. The following are the results : — 120 Yards Handicap.—First heat : H. H. Davy, scratch, 1 ; S. Major, 10 yards, 2 ; O. Stevens, 8 yards, 3. Time, 12|sec. Second heat: W. R. Stone, 6 yards, 1 ; B. Owen, scratch, 2 ; L. Meldrum, 8 yards, 3. Time, 12£ sec, Third heat : H. Owen, 10 yards, 1; J. M. Cumming, 9 yards, 2 ; A. J. Farquhar, 7 yards, 3. Time, 12£ sec. Final: W. R. Stone, 6 yards, 1; J. M. Cummings, 9 yards, 2 ; H. H. Davy, scratch, 3. Six others started for the final heat, and the race was a good one. Time, 12Jsec. Novice Bicycle Race, one mile.S. Hunter, 10 yards, 1 ; F. M. Purchas, 25 yards, 2; M. McCausland, 50 yards, 3. The other starters were :—H. Nicholson, scratch ; F. Battley, 15 yards ; T. Grange and T. Hammond, 40 yards ; A. Service, 60 yards. Service, who had the best of the positions at the start, soon gave way to McCausland, but in the second round Hammond took the lead, maintaining his advantage until a mile and a-half had been traversed, and at this point he fell when going strongly, and was forthwith out of the race. Hunter then assumed command, and won easily. Time, 3min 41 sec. Walking Race, one mile.—E. W. Burton, 70 yards, 1 ; F. C. Beale, 90 yards, 2; J. Selby, 20 yards, 3. D. Fountain, 170 yards, also started. Fountain led the first time round the course, when he retired, leaving Burton in command. From this out the latter was never caught, and he won easily. Time, 7min 17|sec. Bicycle Handicap, five miles. —A. G. Clarke, 70 yards, 1 ; J. A. Stewart, 50 yards, 2 ; A. Stewart, 20 yards, 3. A. G. Buchanan, scratch ; J. Selby, 50 yards; F. W. Hunt, 120 yards ; M. McCausland, 250 yards; and T. Hammond, 250 yards, were the other starters. Hammond went away at the start at a good pace, and he led for a mile and a half, when Clarke came through, and assumed second place J. Stewart, who had been spurting a good deal from the start, being third, Selby and Buchanan creeping up steadily. At the back of the course Clarke passed Hammond, and Selby and Buchanan, racing in company, got on terms with McCausland, and passed him, J. Stewart taking second place. Though the other positions were changed during the remainder of the journey, Clarke kept command from this out. and, going in a nice, easy style, won with a lot in hand, by 40 yards from J. Stewart; A. Stewart, 50 yards, behind his brother, being third. Time, 18min 16|sec. One Mile Handicap.J. J. Tizard, 40 yards, 1; E. W. Burton, 30 yards, 2;C. F. Ifwerson, 20 yards, 3. This was a good race, Tizard coming with a strong rush, and only beating Burton within four yards of the tape. Time, 4min 51 sec. 120 Yards Hurdle Race.—R. B. Lusk, 1; B. Owen, 2; S. W. Sommerfield, 3. J. J. Poland and W. E. Hackett also ran. Lusk won by about a yard. Hackett fell during the race. Time, 17isecs. 150 Yards Race, for men of the Squadron.—R. Pattison, 1; Patrick Neal, 2; Thos. E. Weaving, 3. Five men faced the starter. Pattison and Neal ran a splendid race, and the former won by only two yards. W. Morgan was left at the starting post. Bicycle Race, one mile and a-half.—A. G. Clarke, 20yards, 1 ; A. Stewart, scratch, 2; F. M. Purchas, 40 yards, 3. The following also started :—J. A. Stewart, 5 yards ; J. Selby, 7 yards ; J. Lecky, 12 yards ; F. W. Hunt, 25 yards ; and T. Hammond, 50 yards. Hammond led the first time round, but passing the pavilion he yielded the premier position to Purchas, who was four yards in advance of the field at the turn. At the back Clarke came up very fast, and taking the lead, was first into the straight, where his followers closed round him, and A. Stewart, who had set to work in a determined fashion, came away in pursuit of the leader. Clarke, however, had the race in hand, and won as he pleased by 10 yards, a similar distance separating Stewart and Purchas. Hammond was fourth, and Selby fifth, whilst Hunt finished last.' The time was lmin 36sec.

Handicap Race, one mile and a quarter. W. R. J. Stone, 10 yards, 1 ; D. A. C. Brown, 19 yards, 2 ; H. Owen, 25 yards, 3. Sixteen started. J. N. Baxter broke twice before the firing of the pistol, and his handicap allowance (13 yards) was in consequence reduced by two yards. When the men were sent away Lynch led to the back of the course, where Wynne took up the running ; but he, too, retired a little further, and then a series of changes ensued, the lead being in succession held by several of the competitors. When the entrance to the straight was reached the field was in a cluster, and a grand finish resulted. Fifty yards from the post it seemed as though Brown would win, for he had beaten those of his opponents who were alongside him at the turn ; but here Stone, who nad treaded his way up on the inside, challenged him, and beating him in the last few yards won a splendid race on the tape amidst great cheering. Time, 54sec. 160-Yards Race, for Officers of the Squadron.— Tilly, 1; A. Cay, 2; Hosken, 3. The following also ran :—W. Hosken, H. Heygate, W. Guy, S. Drury-Lowe, G. Baira, W. Wardj W. S. Nicholson, and T. D. Kelly. This race was contested with freat spirit, Tilly winning by a yard. ' ime, 17 and two-fifth sec.

Club Championship, half a mile.—R. B. Lusk, I;W. T. Wynyard, 2; J. N. Baxter, 3. J. A. Stewart, H. C. Poulsen, H. Pit tar, E. Diddams, H. Kinder, and A. F. Burton were the other starters. Poulsen led to the back of the course, where he retired in favour of Kinder, and a little further on Burton dropped out of the race. Baxter had a lead of three yards from Kinder as they Sassed the stand; and the latter a short istance further on surrendered second place to Poulsen. At the back, opposite to the pavilion, Lusk ran up to the leaders, and passing Baxter without a struggle, led at the turn ; whilst approaching the straight Baxter gave way to Wynyard, who then made a dead set at Lusk. When fairly on the line for home, Wynyard's great run rapidly brought him up to his opponent, but he had commenced too late, and Lusk staved off the rush in time to breast the tape a .few inches in front. Considerable excitement prevailed for a little time, many being under the impression that the race had terminated in a dead heat. Time, 2min 8 3-sth sec.

Handicap Bicycle Race, three miles.— A- G. Clarke, 50 yards, 1; A. Howard, 30 yards, 2; J. A. Steward, 30 yards, 3. F. W. Hunt, 90 yards, and S. Hunter, 130 yards, also started. This race was another gift to Clarke, who went to the front when alf-a-mile had been completed, and won as he pleased by 40 yards. Howard was 20 yards in the front of Stewart, who was third ; the others did nob finish. Time, lOmin 49 3-sthsec.

He ran wide within twenty yards of the tape, how. ever, and Hutchinson coming through fast on the inside, beat him off, and won bv two yards ; Stone, who had run very determinedly, being close up third.
