SHOCKING RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

[by telegraph.—press association.] Dune din, Saturday. A surface man, employed on the railway, named Jeffreys, was killed on the line today by one of the trains to the racecourse. It appears he was crossing the lino just as the train was approaching, when he slipped, and was unable to recover himself before the train was upon him. Both his legs were completely cub oil", and lie died shortly afterwards.

Later. It appears that the man Jeffries, who was killed by being run over by a train, was walking along the line when ho saw the train approaching. In a thoughtless manner lie stepped on to the adjoining line of rails. He stated before his death that he was conscious the moment ho had done so that he had got in front of the engine, but before he could get out of the way the engine was on him. He leaves a wife and large family.
