THE RIFLE MEETING.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
Oamaru, Friday. After a very pleasant trip of 15 hours, the Auckland and Thames representatives to the Rifle Association arrived at Lyttelton this morning at five o'clock, and left Christchurch for Oamaru by the Southern express at eight a.m., arriving at three p.m. The advance guard, consisting of Lieutenant Moore, Captain Little, Sergeants Parslow, and Doughty; gunners Webster, Payne, and Woolley, and Volunteer Quinlan, arrived here a few days ago, having left Auckland on Thursday, and they mado arrangements for their comrades, who wero to follow. All hands are very favourably impressed with Oamaru, the fino stone buildings and wide streets exciting their admiration. The only drawback, so far, is the cold weather, which tho northerners feel rather keenly ; in fact on walking down the street one can pick out an Aucklander by his having his hands jammed into his trousers' pockets. Some idea may be formed of the weather when fires have to be lighted in the sitting-room. Those who arrived a few days ago haye been having a practice on the local range—Little, Par-slow, Payne, Webster, and Quinlan, making very good scores on each occasion.
