RETRENCHMENT.
THE CUTTING DOWN POLICY.
IMPORTANT CHANGES.
AUCKLAND OFFICIALS AFFECTED.
[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN correspondent.] Wellington, .Monday. Among the officers of the defence force who have received notices of their services being dispensed with are Major Scanncll, of Taupo, and one or two in Auckland whose names are the subject of rumour. Some of the names mentioned are those of very high officers—officers receiving, it is said, considerably more than a thousand a year. Several names of officers connected with the Department of Justice are also mentioned its coming under the retrenching scalpel. I hesitate to be the first to give publicity to ill news lest I should be premature or prove erroneous. There are some changes, however, to which the same objection does not apply* Mr. Keswick, R.M., of Timaru, has been granted leave of absence on the ground of ill-health. Captain Wray, R.M., and Crown Lands Officer on the West Coast, is to fill in Mr. Berwick's place temporarily. It is also stated that Dr. Campbell, of the Permanent Staff at Fort Cautley, has received notices that his services are to be dispensed with.
