OBITUARY.
The death i 3 announced of Mrs Travers, wife of the well«known solicitor of Wellington. Some time since she underwent an operation, and gradually sinking, died on j January 2, aged 67. Mr. Charles Allen, ono of the largest landowners of Dunedin, died <>a January 0. The P.ev. David Walker, Church of England clergyman, who recently arrived at Dunedin from the home country for the benefit of his health, has died in tae hospital from typhoid fever. News has been received of the death of Mr. Fairfax Johnson, of Taaranga. Mr. Johnson was an old settler, having been in the colony for about sixty years. He had reeided for a lca% period on the Wairoa river, Taurangadistrict. Mr. Johnson was afdicted with caecer, and had been for some time a greet sufferer. Our Paparoa correspondent writes :— "Mr Charles Hook, who nad suffered for some months from a dropsical complaint, departed this life at the age of 73. He has been identified with this settlement from the commencement, fulfilling the multifarious duties of postmaster, registrar, and clerk of the President Magistrate's Court, etc., for many years. He also took a leading part in the movement which resulted in the formation of the Albertland Special Nonconformist Settlements, materially assisting Mr W. R. Brame in lending his house in London for committee purposes, in advocating the scheme, and in visiting Birmingham as a delegate from Loudon. Hi 3 remains were interred in the Wesleyan cemetery on the lath January by the Rev. T. F. Jones, assisted by the Rev. C. A. Tobin, in the presence of a large concourse of people, many of whom were old settlers, who thus testified to the esteem in which Mr. Hook was held."
