THE YEARLING SALES.
SYLVIA park. The annual sale of yearling stock was hold at Sylvia Park, near Otahuhu, on the 4th January. A special train was provided, which left the Auckland station at twelve o'clock, and prior to this a number of fourhorse brakes left town with buyers and visitors. There was a large attendance, and a greater number of buyers than was anticipated. Our Australian friends were appareutly absent, but there were Southern buyers in tho market who had a keen lookoat for the cream of the sale. Prior to the luncheon, for which there was a most liberal provision, visitors inspected the lots which _ were on offer. They were in fine condition, although not so advanced as those of last year, as the strangles had been very busy with most of them, aud it took Major Walmsley all he knew to get several of them into presentable form. Tho colt which attracted most attention was that by Musket — Nelly Moore, half brother to Lechiel. lie is a picture of symmetry. Some colts by Robinson Crusoe also attracted much attention. Ingoing's offspring were well-developed and handsome as a rule, and tho Leolinus piogeny were fully up to the mark, some of them being remarkable for development, and showing great promise. So far as tho result of tho sale is coucerned, it has proved fully satisfactory to the directors, the total realising more than anticipations by several hundred guineas. Every lot was sold, and the total realised was 4316 guineas. Mr. J. M. Philsou conducted the. sale, and In opening it he referred to the high-class quality of the stock to be offered—high uot only by their aires but by their dams ; aud he paid a high compliment to Mr. G. G. Staad, of {Jhristchurch, for his judgment aud enterprise in importing no many of the grand blood mares which wcro now the property of tho Stud Company. The visitors firat went to inspect the youngsters—seven very fashionably-bred yearlings, through whoso veins coursed tho blood of soniy of the best tires and dams south of the line, and the condition in which they were presented was highly creditable. There was no disposition, however, to bid, and but one wan Bold, a brown colt by ingomar—Fanny Fisher, a fine raking colt, and one likely to turn out a racer.
