LORD LOFTUS' BANKRUPTCY.

[press association.]

London, January 27. Lord Augustus Loftus, in his examination before the Bankruptcy Court, said that his expenses had always exceeded his allowance, except when he held the position of British Envoy at Munich, in 1862. His expenses as Governor of New South Wales had been very heavy, having to entertain so many soi-aisant notabilities.

Sydney, January 28. The Daily Telegraph, in referring to the bankruptcy of Lord Loftus, formerly Governor of New South Wales, says that in his statement the bankrupt has slandered the colony, and urges that Parliament should deal with the matter. It points out that while Governor of the colony Lord Loftus was handsomely remunerated, and adds that if he did not save money, it must have been because he was loaded with his European debts.
