OTAHUHU RACING CLUB'S SUMMER

MEETING. The Summer Meeting of the Otahuhu Raoing Club was held on Saturday at the course, Otahuhu. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance. Though the raoing was good, a couple of "surprises" were recorded, notably that of Pipi in the Steeplechase, the totalisator backers of the mare netting a dividend of £37 16s. The arrangements for the meeting were as usual good, and an excellent innovation was made in the adoption of numbered saddle-cloths for the horses competing in the various races—a device which has proved eminently useful at Ellerslie. The following are the results of the various events; —

Maidjen Platb of 20sovs. weight for ago. About 1 mile 44 yards. Mr. J. B. Williamson's bile g Shillelagh, 4yrs, by Hippocampus Jenny, Bit 111b (U. Laiag) ... ... 1 Mr. H. French's ch c Eruption, 3yrs, Bst (Stone) ... .« 2 Mr. D. McKimaen's br g Sir Walter, 3yr», 7«t 1 lib 3 On Guard, Javelin, and Dollar also started. Shillelagh went at onoe to the front, when the flag was lowered, and making every post a winning one, won easily by a length and a half. The totalisator dividend was £o 15*. Hurdle Race of 40sovs, saovs from the •takes to go to second horse. Two miles. Mr. J. Kean n's oh g Silvio, 6yrs, by Isaak Walton— Mokamoka, lOst 101b (Nolan) 1 Messrs. Hayr Bros.' br m Ma Petite Fille, 6yrs, 9?t 111b (Bayr) ... ' 2

Tawhiao (9»t 71b, Mahao) was the only other starter, Peter Osbeck and Black Joe being scratched. Silvio was first away, and he and Tawhiao raoed for some distarice together, when the former drew away, and led past the stand by two lengths. At the back of the course Ma Petite Fille challenged the leader, but she could never get past him, and at the turn in Nolan had but to loosen the rein to permit Silvio to come on, and win easily by two lengths. Tawhiao did not finish. Dividend, £1 14s. Suburban Plate Handicap of 60iovs, .'isovs from the stakes to go to the second horse, Distance, one mile and a half. Mr. J. Lonnard's b m Clogs, 6yrs, by Leolinus— 83t 41b (Suther-

land) ... 1 Hon. E. Mitchelson's ch f Formo, 3yrs,

6st 12lb (Myers) - ... ... 2 Mr. M. Gallagher's gr g Peter Osbeck, aged, 7st 101b (Durston) 3

Friendship (Oat, Edgcumbe), Antelope (8«t 101b, Morigan), Tamora (7st 12lb, Taylor), Lioness (7st 101b, Skirving), Miss Alice (6st 101b, Katterns), Britannia (6«t 51b, Shaw), and Shillelagh (6st, Cook) also ran. Leorina, Tennyson, Lady Alice, The Cat, and Eruption were scratched. Whilst the horses ware ranged at the startingpost awaiting the order to move, a person in the crowd called '* Go " and the majority of the jockeys thus gaining the impression that Mr, MoGee had lowered the flag, the whole of the field, with the exception of Antelope, Clogs, and Formo, started away at racing pace, and traversed the course once round bsfore the riders discovered the mistake. Of the three horses named, Clog* ran as far as the turn out of the straight, and was then pulled up. When the other horses returned to the post, the jockeys expressed some dissatisfaction, but the starter of course ruled that he had not despatched the field, and another line-up was ordered. Thu flag; was eventually lowered to an indifferent start, Formo being three lengths in front of her field, and she maintained that ; position , until the entrance to the straight was reached, where Clogs came. through a oloaely paoked ruck, and when fairly in the run home was, with the leader, Peter Osbeck, olose by making a desperate efforts to get on terms. Coming to the rails, however, Clogs drew away as she liked, and won by two lengths, Formo being second, a aeok in front of Peter Osbeok. Dividend, £4 19s,

The Selling Hack Race was won by Mermaid, ridden by Darston, Welcome Joe being second, and Rockbarton third These were the only starters. Dividend, £1 10s. Fairplay (lOst, G. Laing) won the Selling Hurdle Race, Black Joe (8»t 71b) running seoond, and Wideawake (9«t 71b) third. Evening Star also ran. The totalisator dividend was £2 14s.

The Handicap Pony Kaoe was won by Mayflower, who beat eight others. Divi« dend, £4 7s. •

Handicap Steeplechase of 60iovs, Ssovs from the stakes to go to seoond horse. About three miles.

Mr. J. M. Donaldson's b m Pipi, aged, by Southern Chief Ninette, 9st 4lb

(Collins) 1 Mr. P. Perry's br g Whalebone, aged, 9«t 12lbs (G. Laing) ... 2 Mr. J. Kean ns oh m Magnesia, 6yrs, lOst 121b (Nolan) 3

Falcon, list (Rae), Torpedo 10»t (J. Laing), and Argyle, 9st (Frewin), were the other starters. The lead was at onoe assumed by Whalebone when the flag went down, Torpedo going away next, Falcon, Tawhiao, and Magnesia together, and Argyle lost, The first hurdle was safely negotiated, but Argyle on landing stumbled, and was only saved from falling by tbe cleverness of his rider, Frewin, who, as he regained bis seat in the saddle, was loudly applauded. At the seoond obstacle Torpedo tell, the jockey, J. Laing, being severely shaken, and the horse was thenceforth out of the raoe. Whalebone had now secured a strong lead, and racing to the bushes opposite the stand he had ten lengths' advantage of Falcon, Pipi, Tawhiao and Argyle being next. Magnesia had lost a lot of ground through baulking at the fence going off of the course proper, and she again ran off at the hurdle coming to the dip, the remainder of the field being a long distance in advance when the mare once more set out in pursuit. Whalebone showed the way into the country at the back of the stand, but at the second fence of the double near the saddling paddock he ran off, and Faloon assumed the lead, he, Pipi, and Tawhiao clearing the post and rail fenoe in company, whilst Whalehone, who had been brought on again, was some distance away. Falcon now made every use of the opportunity he had gained, and he led the field along at a good pace, having, however, only a length's lead of Pipi at the back of the stand, Tawhiao a length away, whilst Whalebone and Magnesia were next, and running against great odds to recover, if possible, their lost ground. Tawhiao fell at the post and rail fenoe opposite the stand, and Falcon and Pipi drew away, it now being evident that the Issue lay between this pair. Coming to the dip, Pipi was pulling double, and as they ran on to the entrance to the straight she came away without a struggle, the whip now being out to Falcon. The mare cleared the hurdle very steadily, but Falcon came down, and Whalebone, on landing, responded gallantly to the vigorous efforts of Laing, and came with a great rush, being, however, just too late to beat Pipi, who won by a neck, Magnesia just beating Tawhiao for third honours. Dividend, £37 16«. Flying Stakes of 30aovs. Threequirters of a mile.

Mr. J. All will's oh f Haricot, 3yr«, by

The other starters were: — Tennyson, Bst 81 ; Lioness, 7st 121b; Brown Rose, 7st 2ib; Boomerang, 7st; Artist, 7»t; Briseis, Hit lOtb; and Octopus, 6st. Dividend, £11 17s.
