HAND-IN-HAND

ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA."

THE DEFENCE QUESTION.

LORD BRASSEY'S VIEWS.

WHAT THE TIMES SAYS.

[PBBSS ASSOCIATION.J

London, December 15. Lord Brassey, in a letter to the London Times, urges the necessity of defending Port Darwin, asserting that it is not enough, as advocated by the Imperial Conference, to leave the defence of that point to light guns and a small force of volunteers.

The Times, commenting on the letter, recognises the importance of the suggestion. Australia having become a second centre of the Empire, and daily increasing in wealth and population, ought to possess a defensive establish* ment capable of joining England halfs way in defending the Imperial arteries of trade. The article asserts further that the immediate fortification of Thursday Island and Albany is a matter of the most urgent necessity.
