If a sufficient number of passengers offer, the barque will be laid on for the port named. Prior to going there, however, she would proceed to Newcastle for a cargo of coal and return here, and after landing a part of the cargo, sail far her destination.

The s.n. Chelmsford resumed her running last evening, leaving for Opotiki. The three-masted schooner Silver Cloud, for Sydney, and the Mariner, for this port, were both loaded at Whangaroa yesterday, and were awaiting a favourable change of wind to get Away on their voyages. DIAMOND. i The second vessel of the squadron that la, within the next few, days, to rendezvous in this harbour, arrived in port yesterday morning, at about 11 o'olock, in the shape of an old visitor to Auckland, the screw corvette Diamond and to-paorrow the third visitor—the Rapid— reach here. The Diamond is of the sea service unprotected class, and is now in her thirteenth year of age, having been built at Sheerness in 7.874- She is of the old type of ship which ' may be said to be now obsolete, —but as against the war craft *spf the present day she presents to the eye some amount of shapeliness that is wholly missing in the war ships now built, hut her efficiency lies more in weight of metal than in armour. While the Diamond can be biassed among those now obsolete, a day or two will show us the Calliope, which is a lepresentatire of the corvette class of modem times, and with the two vessels named they may be likened to the eld year " going out" and the new year " com ins ia,''. Since the Diamond has been on th

Australian station aha has don* a large amount of work, chiefly in the northern part* of the Queensland coast and among the islands of the South Seas, and the ordering of the ship to Auok« land ii thought to hare been greatly in the inter' eats of the health of her offioers and orew. The majority of the officer* are strangers to this port, bat in her captain we have an old visitor, his first visit being with the Flying Squadron, which arrived here on the Regatta day of 1870. He was then lieutenant of H.M.S. Phoebe. The following few facts respecting the Diamond may prove of interest She is a wooden vessel of 220 feet long, and 37 feet beam, with a draught of water of 16 feet 4 inches. She la of 1970 tons j displacement, and has engines working up to 2140 horse power. Her armament consists of 12 64-poand muzzle-loading guns, 4 Nordenfeldts, and 2 Gatling guns, while for field and boat work, she has one each of 9 and 6 pound guns. Her speed under favourable oiroumatances, reaches to the respeotoble rate of 12 knots, and her coal-carrying capacity is sufficient for 270 tens. Of the veyage across, we learn that the Diamond left Sydney on the 4th last., and for the first four days had favouring winds and fine weather. En route a aearoh was made for the derelict vesael Nanoy Holt, but despite a careful look out, nothing was seen of the vessel named. Her ore which numbers 228 men, are a fine-looking lot. Prior to coming into port thia morning the men were set to big gun drill, whioh occupied one, two, or three hours. The following is a complete list of the officers of the Diamond'Japtain, Francis S. Clayton; lieutenants, (G). William P. Shakospear, James G. Bremer, (N) Francis T. Birr, Ayliner H. O. William*, Q.Y. Simpson, chaplain, naval instructor, Rev. Brabazon, M.A.; staff surgeon, Horace E. F. Cross ; paymaster, John K. Mono; staff engineer, John Murdoch; assistant paymaster, Cecil Vivian ; engineer, James J, Stuart; gunner, Richard P. George; boatswain, James Doidge ; carpenter, Joseph Hallam; aoting sab-lieutenants, Thomas H. Foster and Willoughby B. Cowper»Coles ; mid» shipmen Cecil J. R. L.
